(Travel) Health Insurance

In general all students are obliged to have a health insurance policy until the age of 30 years. Exceptions: Language school students and PH.D. students.

If a person is insured in  their home country and visits Germany for a short period, it is possible to be exempt from the compulsary insurance. But  consequently, this person could lose his right to be insured later with the compulsory health insurance system.

Exceptions for students from EU- and agreement countries. These students can( c)apply for exemption and will still be able to be insured later within the compulsory health insurance system.
For students from these countries it is useful to get the European Health insurance card in their home country. With the European health insurance card, people can, like in their home country, visit a doctor, a dentist or hospital and the treatment costs are covered by the insurance in the home country.

Ist man nur im Ausland versichert, ist es möglich, dass man im Falle einer Behandlung zunächst selbst für die Kosten aufkommen muss, das Geld aber später von seiner Versicherung zurück erstattet bekommt.

All students who stay 6 months or longer should obtain a health insurance policy in Germany. It is recommended to take out a  travel health insurance policy for any travel activities abroad.

Sufficient insurance cover is absolutely neccessary, otherwise the student has to cover the medical costs in the case of illness or accident (all by ) him/herself.
