I thought carefully before I made the decision to study Informatics at the RWTH in Aachen. Aachen achieved an excellent position within the comparative national university ranking. I have been in Germany for five years and hope to finish my studies within the next two years.
As a matter of fact I was forced to seek all necessary information concerning my studies by myself. To be successful in information retrieval, being competent in the German language is very beneficial. My personal advice to all international students: Better learn some German before you enter the country, but also obtain the required German language certificates in Germany..
If you want to enjoy studying abroad it is extremly helpful to be eager to learn and to assimilate to the environment by crossing the language and other barriers. With an open mind you should first discover the different culture, before you present your comparative judgement.
