Students from EU-countries may work without special work permits in Germany. Students from the following countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Cyprus have to apply for a work permit at the agency for work (Agentur für Arbeit).

All other students have to comply with the 90-days per year rule (equivalent to 180 half days = 4 hours per day), which says student are allowed to work for up to 90 days without having a work permit.

One exception is for PhD students: by presenting your PhD-agreement at the immigrants' registration department (Verlinkung mit dem Adressfeld:) you can be granted the permission to undertake work which is related to your PhD studies.
